My tip uses stale bread that would either be bird food or in the trash. Whenever I need to drain cooked ground beef, sausage, or other grease producing meat, I use stale bread at the bottom of a 4 cup measuring cup. I simply put two slices at the bottom and rest my colander on top and pour in the meat along with the grease. The grease drains and is soaked up by the bread. It saves on paper towels, no leaks in the trash can, and no clogged pipes. |

The case of the pancake that cracked everyone up! Some time ago we were attempting to surprise my mother by remodeling her kitchen while she was on an extended vacation. Because we were laying new flooring in the area, we purchased a 25 lb bag of leveling compound to smooth the floor for tile. The bag broke so we poured the remains into a large can...the type that restaurants use to store flour in. Also, unfortunately, the type my mother used to store her flour in, having worked as a cook in restaurants most of her life. She was thrilled with her new kitchen! We made it just as she had described, just as she envisioned in her dreams. The next morning I woke to my mom knocking on the bedroom door nearly in tears! "I don't understand...I have been making pancakes for 40 years and I have never seen anything like it" she sobbed. I am not much good before my 10 or 12th cup of coffee in the morning so it did not really compute. "You have to look at this! You have to come here right now!" I stumbled to the kitchen not sure what to expect. She calmly poured some pancake batter in the pan and waited for it to be ready to flip. "Now!" she exclaimed and flipped the pancake in her usual easy style. The pancake hit the pan and shattered into a million small pieces. "What is wrong!" she exclaimed. I looked at the can of flour on the counter and realized immediately that it was the wrong can - it was the can of leveling compound. With the commotion in the kitchen everyone in the house awoke. It was one of the funniest morning coffee chats I ever had...we were all cracking up...just like the pancake! |
