“When chopping garlic, be on the look out for a green vein running down the inside center of the clove. Always remove this since it is very bitter and will affect the flavor of the garlic.”

April 2001 “Cooking Disasters” Winner — Melissa Farber

“When I was married a few years ago, I received a KitchenAid Stand Mixer as a wedding gift. I decided to use it for the first time to make Christmas cookies. I added eggs, sugar, flour, etc. to the metal bowl. I carefully chose the proper attachment and locked the bowl down into place. When I flipped the ON button, the bowl starting spinning out of control. I remember the eggs oozing down our white kitchen cabinets. I did not have the bowl screwed tightly into the base of the mixer. What a mess…but the day was not over yet. After my cooking disaster, my husband and I set up and decorated our 7 ft. tall flocked Christmas tree. Just when we were about to call it a day and relax with a glass of wine, the tree fell over and hit the coffee table. Thankfully, the rest of that Christmas season was uneventful!”
