Candy McMenamin

So that you don't lose all the juices in a piece of meat when cooking it, avoid using a fork to turn it. Lift it with a fork on the side or near the bone.

Also, when you are carving meat, do not put the fork into it if possible. Place the curved side of the fork on top of the meat and slice it with the knife.

August 2004“Cooking Disasters” Winner —
Audrey Larson

I was a harried, hard-working person, very short of time, who had to bring goodies to a gathering. I lovingly baked an Apple Walnut Cake, even using apples from my own trees. I set it to cool, then tasted it. I'd forgotten the sugar! It tasted awful.

I hurriedly prepared and baked another one. It is a complicated recipe, with many ingredients, and I was really pressed for time now. When it cooled, I tasted it. I'd forgotten the sugar AGAIN! Now I was out of time, had to leave, and dashed to the store for a store-bought package of something-or-other. What a disaster and embarrassment to be the only person to bring a store-bought treat!
