If you are making a soup and it tastes too salty, slice a raw potato and add it to the soup. Keep it in the soup until the potato turns translucent. The potato will absorb some of the salt.

This was actually my husband's disaster who is an excellent cook most of the time. We have a favorite recipe for lamb chops where you marinate them in a mixture of red wine, olive oil and herbs. While the chops are on the grill, you reduce the marinade on the stovetop to pour over the chops after cooking. He used the smallest saucepan that we own so the layer of oil was quite thick. Very suddenly, the marinade exploded covering the cabinets, stove and even the ceiling. At the time, our kitchen was totally white so you can imagine the mess! Since that disaster, we make sure to use a large saucepan so the layer of oil is spread out over a larger area.
