Whenever cutting up chicken, make sure to start with a good sharp knife. It is also easier to cut up the chicken and remove the skin if the chicken is still semi-frozen. Also, keep in mind that you can enjoy a delicious, yet much more affordable meal, by using different cuts of meat. For instance, leg quarters are considerably cheaper than chicken breasts or even chicken wings (used for Buffalo Wings). The same thing is true with pork. Instead of center cut,try pork steaks. And, for even more delicious flavor, lightly spice your meat before freezing!

July 2004 “Cooking Disasters” Winner —
Jilayne Phillips

I was just beginning to make dinner one evening after a long day at work. I put the water on the stove to boil and ran to the computer to check my email really quick. That's when I heard a HUGE explosion - like every dish in the cupboard had been smashed at once. I sprinted to the kitchen thinking only of my two girls, but thankfully, no one was hurt. It turned out that I had left a glass cutting board on our ceramic flat-top stove and then turned on the wrong burner. There were little pebbles of glass EVERYWHERE! After I doused the burning oven mitt with water I tried to turn the stove off, but the burner remained that ominous red color. Eventually I had to unplug the stove completely in order for the burner to cool down. When I plugged the stove back in to finish cooking, the burner heated right back up - without being turned on. Instead of a gourmet meal I ended up making a phone call to General Electric that night! Talk about a cooking disaster!
