March 2001 “Cooking Tips” Winner — Kelly Ryan

“Whenever I am cooking recipes that include a lot of vegetables, I always keep a pot of water (or vegetable broth) simmering on the stovetop. As I am preparing the vegetables for the recipes, I take the scraps and anything left over and toss them in the pot to create "home made" vegetable broth. I then freeze the broth in small quantities. It comes in very handy and certainly tastes better than vegetable broth from a can”.

March 2001 Cooking Disasters” Winner— Frank Esposito

“I guess this would fit better under a category called "post-baking disasters". I thought I would share it anyway since it still gives me a chuckle. When I was a kid, my parents invited my aunt and uncle over for dinner. My mother was running behind schedule and finished baking a cake at the last minute. She decided to put the cake in the open kitchen window to cool. At the time, we lived on the second floor and this window was right next to the refrigerator. When my uncle arrived he helped himself to a beer and in the process, knocked the cake out of the window with the refrigerator door. No one noticed that the cake was missing. When it came time for my mother to serve dessert she thought that she had lost her mind. Actually, she only lost her cake but it took a while to figure it all out”.
