October 2001 Cooking Disasters Winner Tim Lavere
"This has happened at least once to anyone who grills on a gas barbecue. I just think that my circumstance is a bit unique. Ever since our children were very little, we had our annual "summer picnic" in February. We dress up in summer clothes, make a fire in the fireplace and grill hamburgers with all the usual side dishes - potato salad, cole slaw, deviled eggs, etc. The kids really got into it and looked forward to it each year. My son even bought plastic ants to put on the blanket we put in front of the fireplace. Now our grandchildren join in.
Last year, we ended up with all of our relatives from Toledo at our house for the picnic. Everyone had brought summer clothes to change into and were excited to be part of this annual event that they had always heard about.
I fired up the gas grill and put the burgers on. When I went out in the snow to turn them over - you guessed it - I had run out of gas! My wife was kind enough not to say a word about my not checking the propane ahead of time."
